The intelligence body of the NSS of RA, within the framework of the powers assigned to it by Law of the Republic of Armenia “On the National Security Bodies” and the legislation of RA, both from the territory of RA and from the territory of foreign states, carries out intelligence activities, including foreign intelligence, aimed at obtaining information on the threats posed to the national security of the Republic of Armenia and at strengthening the foundations of the state. Pursuant to the Charter of the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia, the NSS of RA carries out operational management of the work of all state bodies and subdivisions carrying out intelligence activities related to national security issues in the territory of Armenia.
In the state administration system, the intelligence body of the NSS of RA is one of the important components of ensuring national security and is aimed at protecting the security of the individual, society and the state from external threats.
In order to counteract the challenges to the national security of RA and external threats posed to the state, as well as to effectively resolve issues related to vital interests of Armenia in the foreign policy sphere, the intelligence body in its functional areas acquires, processes and analyzes intelligence information to report to the top leadership of RA. Carrying out intelligence activities within the framework of solving the problems set before it, it supports also the normal development of Armenia in the military-technical, economic, scientific-technical and other fields.
Intelligence is one of the important tools for ensuring security and effective governance for any state. From the very first days of independence, Armenian intelligence developed and strengthened in times of ordeals due to the effective use of best experience of previous periods of Armenian statehood developing and annealing intelligence mind and peculiarities of this field.
The intelligence body of the NSS of RA, honorably overcoming the trials dictated by wartime conditions, took its important and irreplaceable place in the state administration system of Armenia in line with the country's development and progress.
Due to the peculiarities of the profession of an intelligence officer, the everyday hard and responsible work of the officers of the field, as a rule, is not subject to coverage and remains under the secrecy label for many decades. Not expecting a public assessment of their own work, the intelligence officers, with their everyday work, make their indispensable contribution to the realization of the unwavering goal of the progress and further development of the Republic of Armenia.
Main Directorate of Counterintelligence
Counterintelligence is a system of functions executed within the competence of national security bodies aimed at disclosure, prevention and suppression of the intelligence activities of special services and other organizations of foreign states, as well as individuals. It is one of the most important components and main directions of the activity of national security bodies without which it is impossible to confront various threats and challenges containing external and internal risks, which are directed against the security of the state, society and the individual and are stipulated by intelligence and subversive aspirations and encroachments on the part of foreign special services.
The counterintelligence structure is also assigned a serious role in the implementation of functions to ensure the security of the political, military, economic, scientific and educational, public and other spheres of the state, the protection of state secrets.
The counterintelligence bodies of the Republic of Armenia since their establishment until now are organizing their functions with the use of explicit and confidential methods and means not prohibited by the legislation of RA, guided by the Constitution of RA, laws “On Service in National Security Bodies”, “On Operative-Search Activity” and a number of other laws and departmental normative acts.
Since 1992, the counterintelligence bodies of RA have managed to identify the main enemy and several dozen spies and agents of other foreign special services, and have neutralized and prevented intelligence-subversive, sabotage programs and actions being prepared against the security of the state, as well as terrorist infiltration programs and actions.
Under the current complicated and rapidly changing geopolitical conditions, the counterintelligence bodies of the NSS of RA are capable of and continue to successfully perform their functions assigned to them by legislation.
